The occupiers were gathering for General Assembly. There were no mics or megaphones so they had to use a call-and-response-type system.
The speaker above is Ivan Marovic, of Otpor fame, telling the crowd about the importance of "symbolic occupation of symbolic places." I heard him speak at NYU earlier in the evening and he is awesome--exactly the person I would want to speak at my rally.
Earlier that day the Troy Davis march had reached Wall Street from Union Square.
The daily schedule included both a Communist Manifesto teach-in and a comedy show.
What's an occupation without free food?
Signs for everyone!
I think this really captures the spirit of the thing.
Really great to see this, Caitlin. I had a friend downtown reporting on the occupation for a website called Waging Nonviolence.

Here are a few texts we sent back and forth yesterday afternoon about 4p:
ME: You at Union Sq.?
NATHAN: Just was
ME: Where you now?
ME: Heading back downtown, I suppose.
N: Back down at Wall St
N: Dude this is insane
ME: Keep doing the Lord's work.
ME: #s?
N: Around 50 just arrested
ME: Disturbing the peace?
ME: Masks?
ME: Well, the cops are out in force all over Union Square still
So on a totally serious note this: http://gawker.com/5843574/cop-throws-wall-st-protester-to-the-ground-for-no-obvious-reason
ReplyDeleteOn a more fun note, this pizzeria has been supplying food to the protesters that people donate (http://gawker.com/5841874/how-a-pizza-joint-became-the-official-caterer-of-the-revolution?tag=occupywallstreet). They created one pie called the "Occu-pie."
On a side note, I don't get all my news from gawker, really.
